About Judith A Smothers
Contemporary, creative two and three dimensional art depicting my imagination at work.
Artists are sometimes known as strange ducks! This particular "duck" has started, stopped (several times) and finally completed a formal fine arts education at Eastern New Mexico University. After teaching art to middle school kiddos, I began free lance art. Soon I headed up an art department that created wildlife and western scenes to be etched on metal surfaces. We etched on guns for the likes of Winchester and Remington, designed limited edition art for Colt Industries and created many custom knife etchings. On the side, I created limited edition pen and ink paintings and experimented with watercolor. Twenty years pass as life takes over. Now it's time to pick up a paintbrush again! After toying with realism for a time, a new style of painting was conceived by "squishing" plastic wrap on a wet watercolor wash and imagining an image. The Mother and Child Series of twelve paintings was the result. Some realism peeks into the flat pattern designs that resemble stained glass windows. Always seeking a new challenge, I embarked upon the 3-D world of clay. Armies of fairies and warriors marched out of my mind and into my life. It's true, I am an explorer...seeking the next creative endeavor. What a journey!
